How the Shockers Pulled Out a Narrow Win in OT
It was a nail-biting finish for the NOVA Bulls and their fans as they almost pulled off an incredible comeback victory against the Shockers. The Shockers had a 1-0 run to start the game, but the resilient Bulls fought back valiantly and even took a late lead going into overtime. Ultimately, the Shockers won in overtime, but it was an exciting game throughout!
The first quarter ended 23-23 with both teams playing close. At halftime, the Shockers had a 53-50 lead with Tylon Smith Jr. leading the way with 15 points and Saul Phiri adding 11 points. On the other side, Earnest Jenkins Jr. had 10 points and Julian Washington added 9 for the Bulls. The Shockers looked like they were on their way to victory when they extended their lead to 14 in the fourth quarter, but then Jonathan Sula stepped up with 10 straight points to bring it back down to 7 and put them within striking distance. With 27 seconds left on the clock, Jerry Carter missed a go-ahead 3-pointer that could have sealed it for the Bulls, setting up an exciting buzzer-beater from Mike Mallory that was ultimately wide. Despite the heartbreaking loss, there’s no denying that this was an incredible game for everyone involved!
In addition to great play from both teams, one thing that made this game so exciting was how well-supported it was by families and kids alike. There were plenty of young people in attendance cheering for their favorite team and players throughout every minute of this thrilling bout between two talented opponents. It just goes to show that basketball is still alive and kicking in America today! In all, while it may have been a heartbreaker for NOVA Bulls fans everywhere, it’s hard not to be amazed by such an amazing game between two competitive sides! From Tylon Smith Jr.'s 15 points to Saul Phiri's 11 points to Earnest Jenkins Jr.'s 10 points and Julian Washington's 9 points—not forgetting Jonathan Sula's 10 straight—it kept us all on our toes until Mike Mallory's wide 3 at the buzzer sealed it in overtime for the Shockers. We can only hope we get more games like this in the future!
